Background Checks & Legal Requirements

Essential information about firearm purchases and transfers in California

All firearm purchases and transfers in California require a background check administered through CalDOJ (California Department of Justice). Here's what you need to know:

Background Check Timeline

Understanding processing times and potential delays

What You Need

Required documents and identification for all transfers

  • 1

    Standard Check (10 days)

CalDOJ typically completes background checks within 10 business days.

  • 2

    Delays (up to 30 days)

Cases requiring review may take up to 30 days. If undetermined, we cannot release the firearm.

  • 3

    Denial

You have the right to appeal through CalDOJ's administrative process.

  • California Real ID, Passport, or Birth Certificate
  • Proof of CA residence (utility bill, car registration, Hunting/Fishing License)
  • FSC (Firearm Safety Certificate) or valid Hunting License
  • Age requirement: 18+ (rifles/shotguns), 21+ (handguns)

Will a background check disqualify me?

CalDOJ checks for felonies, domestic violence restraining orders, mental health commitments, and certain misdemeanors. Most law-abiding citizens pass without issue.

Can I use one background check for multiple purchases?

Yes, for purchases on the same day only.

What if my check is delayed or denied?

Follow up with CalDOJ directly for delays. If denied, you have the right to appeal through CalDOJ's administrative process.

Do transfers require a background check?

Yes. California requires an FFL transfer (with background check) for all firearm transfers between unlicensed individuals.

Important: Laws change regularly. Verify current regulations at California Attorney General's office or consult an attorney for legal advice.
