Do You Need Both?
Yes, if you want to carry concealed. The FSC is required to purchase any firearm in California. The CCW permit is required to carry concealed. Think of it this way: FSC = buying ticket, CCW = carrying license. However, an active CCW will work as an FSC for future purchases.
Important Timing: California requires completion of state-mandated SB 2 training (minimum 16 hours) before you can apply for your CCW permit. The entire process takes 1-2 weeks for testing completion, then 4-12 weeks for county processing. Plan ahead to ensure your application is submitted promptly.
